We have a special audio-only podcast for you today. We are only a couple of weeks into live at HP, and I keep running into great people with a real passion for technology and webOS. Rahul Sood is the founder of Voodoo, a manufacturer of “desktop Ferrari’s”, and the company was acquired by HP in 2006.
Say you’re the world’s largest producer of desktop processors, you’ve got a ton of cash ($16.3 billion to be exact) burning a hole in your pocket, and you’re watching the entire mobile industry grow into a monster before your very eyes with virtually no skin in the game. Sure, you’ve got MeeGo and Moorestown up your sleeve — but considering that they’re distant underdogs with no global domination strategy (or product, for that matter) in sight, it might be time to play some hardball, yeah? CFO Stacy Smith commented this week that the company is “looking at what [it believes] can accelerate [its] progress” in the smartphone game — and, more broadly, the consumer electronics game — and that it “can and will deploy capital” if it sees something it likes, just as it did with its Wind River Systems buy last year
We have some really exciting news to share with you. At GDC this week Palm and Epic Games are demonstrating Unreal Engine 3 on Palm webOS. Unreal Engine 3 powers Epic’s popular Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War along with a large number of titles from leading game developers.
If you’ve been looking to get in on some of that red hot game development action that Palm’s been all about lately, check it out: among the announcements at this year’s GDC , Palm has announced the release of its public beta PDK for webOS.
50 seems to be a pretty trendy number right now, what with Palm’s Pre Plus and Samsung’s i8910 HD both showing off the ability to run more than 49 concurrent processes .
OnlyGeek Best Twitter apps for Palm Pre and Pixi smartphones NetworkWorld.com Two Palm webOS users have recently posted their reviews of the current crop of Twitter apps, both free and paid, for the Palm Pre … Is Palm Just Too Late to the Game
I was having a lovely conversation last week with a woman who had just upgraded to a Palm Pre. She’s been an avid user of Palm products since the company’s first-generation PalmPilots defined the PDA market, and was thrilled to see her beloved Palm finally get back into the game with a modern smartphone, a competitive OS, and a reasonably solid-looking business plan.
Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA , webOS At $100, the underpowered Pixi doesn’t look like a great value against its bigger, older brother — but at the $30 Walmart is charging through its partner LetsTalk, the game changes a bit, doesn’t it? Sure, $70 isn’t that huge of a difference quantitatively, but emotionally, $30 is basically an overpriced meal or two — and considering the old adage of “a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips,” wouldn’t you just rather have webOS? We’ve heard of some bad experiences with LetsTalk rebates in the past, but in this case, it’s just an instant discount, so it seems like it could be a no-brainer for on-the-fencers.
Dan Kurtz, the resident web expert at Self Aware Games , joined Palm on-stage at the Sprint Developer Conference to share his team’s lessons learned from having developed two games for webOS, Word Ace and Card Ace. The team came to webOS thinking that first reports made it an attractive platform for some of their gaming ideas, especially if they matched the games to webOS core capabilities, such as always-on web connectivity, easy text entry from a physical keyboard, and multitasking. That said, they didn’t take the task of developing a webOS game lightly.
Like the previously reviewed GolfPinFinder, the Golf Caddie app for Palm Pre is a golfing companion application which makes use of the Pre’s GPS radio to track courses, holes, and yardage in your golf game. It comes with built-in course data and you can add courses based on either the name or distance from your current location. You can add players as well, along with their respective handicaps
Word Whirl is a vocabulary game for the Palm Pre. The goal is to create as many words as possible between three and six letter long, given a set of six scrambled letters
Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Linux , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS So it seems like the new thing for manufacturers is to gather a bunch of platform champions (read: developers and bloggers) in a room, wax poetic for an hour or two about strategy, and — here’s where it gets awesome — give out or loan hot, new devices to everyone in attendance. Google’s done it , Palm’s done it , and now Nokia’s getting in the game by handing out pre-production N900s on extended loans at its Maemo Summit event last week, and that inevitably means that we’re going to be seeing a ton of unboxings and reviews over the coming days.
The previously reviewed Checkers “Lite” version for Palm Pre was very impressive, and Checkers Pro builds on that excellence to introduce new features and settings that improves gameplay and the overall experience of the game on the Palm Pre. Like the free version, Checkers Pro comes with a single-player and two-player modes (online play is in the works). The algorithm behind the computer opponent is improved.
Can't watch the game? You could follow it with Sprint's NFL LIVE! Buc ‘Em (blog) The Palm Pre is a very elegant smartphone with an attractive touch feature, and smartly hidden …
